THE CHINESE ZODIAC

A famous Chinese legend tells how the Jade Emperor, or god of the gods, summoned every animal on earth to compete in a race. The first twelve animals to finish would have a year named for them.

The results have been accepted universally throughout Chinese culture ever since - even if the story itself has not. In the most widely told story, the rat sat atop the ox until it neared the finish line, then jumped off to claim first place. In succession, the ox took second place, followed by the tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and boar.

The Chinese zodiac remains centered around these 12 animals and is believed to determine the personality and fortune of those born during each animal's respective year.
